Since I live in an apartment, the laundry facility (two washers, two dryers) is shared by tenants. I'm on the ground floor and just a few steps away and I appreciate the convenience vs. hauling my load up and down the stairs (it's a two-storey complex so no elevators).
As I was to load the washers yesterday, I discovered that clothes were left unattended in the machines, for I don't know how long since they stopped spinning. One of my pet peeves!
I could have just DUMPED the clothes on top of the machines and let the forgetful owner take care of them. But since I wouldn't want the same done to me when I get into occasional mental lapse, fortunately, there were still the laundry baskets where I took the liberty of unloading the washers and stuffing the ready-to-be-dried wet clothes in the empty baskets.
I went ahead with my load but with a restrained irritation from the negligence. It was probably benign and unintentional but I still felt that it was inconsiderate. I never knew who had the unattended load but I hope that s/he would find a way to be more TIMELY in taking care of them for the use of the limited number of machines by the other tenants.
My strategy? I set up my timer. I learned this from a friend. It takes about 45 minutes for a full spin cycle for each machine.
It's easy to forget laundry chores, especially when pre-occupied with other things afterwards. But if folks want to keep their laundry private from the hands of strangers, they should be mindful of their existence.
