Winter Solstice

I left my apartment early this afternoon for a leisurely walk in a surrounding neighborhood, a few blocks from the ocean. I took my time scanning the many apartment buildings and condominiums along the way which dominated any visible single family homes. I suppose it's just the nature of real estate in that part of Santa Monica. There were lots of cars parked on the street and as I looked up to glance at the windows, some of which were blocked by a Christmas tree, I wondered who lived there and whether their occupancy is temporary or long-term.

I thought of continuing my stroll to the pier but it wasn't too inviting. The overcast skies and marine layer blocked the ocean view ... as if the street ended with a massive wall of impenetrable gray. I decided to stop by instead at the Third Street Promenade where I saw a few last-minute holiday shoppers or folks who were just whiling their time. Some of their brightly colored sweaters and scarves sparked the liveliness of an otherwise subduing day.

It was only about past 3:00 in the afternoon but it looked and felt much later. It was one of those days when being at home curled in a good book and a warm comforter while sipping a cup of hot tea with honey seemed to be the best way to take a moment.
