With a score of 27 - 24 over the Cincinnati Bengals (QB: Carson Palmer), the San Diego Chargers (QB: Philip Rivers) clinched its fourth straight AFC (American Football Conference) West Division title in their Qualcomm Stadium home field.
I saw the final minutes and the 52-yard winning field goal in the last three seconds of the game after a tied 24-24 score which I thought would go into overtime.
As I wrote yesterday, there is a polarity of emotions between a victory and a loss. For the Cincinnati Bengals, who played with heavy hearts as a tribute to a teammate (receiver Chris Henry) who passed away three days ago, their loss is bigger, deeper and more painful than the game.
The game went on because it had to. The human psyche has a surreal way of blocking pain or grief to get through responsibilities, obligations and expectations.
Post-game analysts were impressed by the Bengals' efforts considering their circumstances. They fought to the extent that they could but the winning points weren't for them to capture and celebrate.
Meanwhile, the Chargers are 17-0 in their December games since 2006 and are in the hunt to beat the league's most elite teams towards the ultimate goal of winning the Super Bowl.
Exciting times for the team and their fans (including my youngest brother, who lives and works in San Diego).
The Chargers are quite a team to watch as football season winds down. Besides, I like their team colors, especially the gold and powder blue. I suppose that's what's fun in being a casual sports fan: flexibility in either rooting for the winners, spoilers, underdogs or at the very least, the most appealing team colors!
Other California NFL (National Football League) Team colors:
* San Francisco 49ers - Scarlet Red, Metallic Gold, White (NFC West)
* Oakland Raiders - Black, Silver (AFC West)
