No Returns

With the Borders gift card that I received on Christmas, I went to my local store after work today to browse some titles for purchase. I was surprised to see the signs that said 40-75% off and furniture fixtures on sale. Then, I realized that specific location will be closing on January 10th! Although there is another bigger and more spacious location that I could go to en route to my work and home commute, I was a little saddened by the impending closure of that familiar and intimate Borders store where I have come and gone through the years to browse, read, buy things for myself and loved ones, share coffee with friends, or listen to live performances. Soon, there will be empty book shelves, magazine racks, CD and DVD stands, and just silence.

As I walked through the store, quite a few items were already in disarray as customers - young and old - took armfuls and bagfuls of purchases while patiently standing in a long line to the cashiers.

I couldn't let myself walk out without having my last souvenirs from that store so I browsed for titles and descriptions until I found enough that I knew I wanted to own:

* The Art of Detection by Laurie R. King
* Arrowsmith by Sinclair Lewis
* The English Patient by Michael Ondaatje
* The Piano Tuner by Daniel Mason

When the store is eventually closed and vacated, I know that I will still be passing by it and momentarily remember it as a once-upon-a-time sanctuary.

  1. Darn, wish I knew about this song earlier - I could've copied it, wrote it in my holiday cards and made my life easier for not having to think about what to write on the darn expensive cards. Darn, I forgot I got sick...and didn't even bother sending out holiday cards. Never mind.
