San Francisco Cable Car

A decorative pencil sharpener.

That's my cable car souvenir from San Francisco. It wasn't bulky to pack and it is just an armstretch away from my office desk whenever I need to sharpen my pencil in time for paperwork.

Yet, it is not just a pencil sharpener. It evokes memories of the cable rides that I would take whenever I visit the city ... scrambling for seats in the open platform and trying not to lean standing against the posts, but holding on tightly as we climbed the steep street hills or as we descended to a roller-coaster-like trough.

On a clear day, the cable car ride was a treat for enjoying the vista - the view of the city as far as your eyes could see, the bay with its blue and aquamarine waters, the enduring Alcatraz, the specks of white sails, and the formidable Golden Gate Bridge.

A cable car ride is a must of a San Francisco experience. Whether it's for the ride, the view, the socializing, or the history, it will always be an icon and a memory.
