I did not watch the 2009 Oscar Awards last night but was very glad to learn that Kate Winselt won Best Actress for her role in the movie, The Reader.
I recently finished reading the book by Bernhard Schlink. Because I saw the movie first, I was able to appreciate the reading experience; more so, I think, that if it was the other way around. The book was an introspective narrative by Michael Berg, the male character, whereas the movie, although likewise narrated, left its impression on me from Winslet's portrayal.
I am hoping to see the movie again while it is still playing in theaters. This time, I am looking forward to a more comfortable viewing distance and position.

Do you know that Kate Winslet was criticized by her native Britain for being a hyperventilating, sweating, nervous wreck when accepting awards? I can't believe they would say that to their homegirl, instead of being proud of her accomplishments. I love it whenever she accepts awards --- she's so humourous, humble, transparent, real and sweet.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know that. But aren't Brits in general known for having stoic, tight-upper-lipped, restrained, and stiff personalities? I suppose Winslet doesn't represent that mold. Good for her!
ReplyDeleteI watched a YouTube interview of her when she said that she was "very upset" about being criticized for leaving her two young children for a long time while filming The Reader. She clarified her schedule and commented, while directly looking to the camera, "I will never leave my children alone whether they are 5, 15, or 55."
She's very witty. :)
