Atis, a Gem of a Fruit

Atis. Also known as custard apple.

I seem to just feel a craving for this fruit. It has a rough, odd-looking exterior, but its delightful surprise is the inside. I remember the sweet taste of its ripe, creamy flesh, and the black seeds that I carefully had to spit out. All I knew was eating it raw and not as an ingredient. And even though I don't recall ever having eaten one ever since living in the United States, memories of atis and how I ate it bring back the familiarity of its touch and taste.

  1. OMG. I am TOTALLY craving atis now. Do you know that I actually ate apples after reading your blog since there are no atis here in the US? You don't need to know this grossness ... but I ate the apple with salt .... My husband was weirded out.

  2. No, it isn't gross. I put salt on fruits, too! Well, I haven't tried it with apple but I have with Indian mango many times! I would always enjoy the sensation of tastes...the combination of tartness, sourness, sweetness, and saltiness.

By the way, did you dip your apple in salt or did you sprinkle it on?

I think that your husband should get used to your food cravings and experimentation! :-)
