Allergy-proof

Early this week, I bought a "Symphony Bouquet" which I put in a vase for my office window display. Its color theme is yellow but there are some red and deep pink floral shades into the mix. I like the yellow daisies that "frame" the bouquet and the three roses in their bulbous, half-opened state. A day after I put them in water with flower food, the bouquet appeared noticeably perkier! They really look beautiful and inspiring, especially against the light of the sun.

This morning, when I arrived, I smiled in excitement and surprise as I noticed a yellow lily in bloom when it was non-existent just a few days before! The other lily buds are just about to unfurl and I am hoping that when I return on Tuesday, after the Martin Luther King holiday weekend, the lily blossoms haven't wilted.

The bouquet gives me simple but profound pleasure. This is the second year that I am continuing the practice of buying myself flowers every few months, starting in January. No occasion, really, but to celebrate and memorialize nature's beauty and colors. It also marks the new quarter of the academic calendar in my work schedule so in a way, the bouquet signifies beginnings.

Flowers do wilt and bouquets dry, which in itself is a recognition of impermanence. Yet, their vibrance, for as long as it lasts, offers joy and wonder ... which makes me very grateful that I am not allergic to them!
