Sesame Street's Milestone

Sunny days, sweeping the clouds away...
On my way to where the air is sweet!
Can you tell me how to get,
How to get to Sesame Street!

Wow! I remember the theme song! Very impressive!

Sesame Street turns 40 years old on November 10, 2009. Forty!!

I grew up watching Sesame Street and looking forward to seeing Big Bird, Bert and Ernie, Oscar the Grouch, Grover, Count, Cookie Monster and Kermit the Frog. The human characters (Maria, Luis, David, Gordon, Susan, Bob, Mr. Hooper) were also familiar folks in the neighborhood. I especially liked Bob who sang "Who Are the People in Your Neighborhood?" and Mr. Hooper, the owner of Mr. Hooper's store.

Sesame Street opened the world with lessons in words, numbers, colors and songs; about friendships, relationships and life that made it playful, amusing and touching. Through the years, I am sure that the show has evolved with the times beyond my personal memories of it as a child. And I realize how time has moved on as I see signs of age on the humans and a sense of detachment that I feel for some of the non-human characters.

Perhaps the indifference is a consequence of growing up and eventually having to leave the comfort of the "neighborhood" to venture elswhere and take on adult responsibilities and pre-occupations. Yet, somehow it doesn't really leave those whom it has touched; at least, not completely. Otherwise, the theme song wouldn't have still echoed in my mind.

Forty years ...

I may see Big Bird and company with grown-up eyes now, but at heart, they will always be comforting childhood buddies.

Happy Anniversary, Sesame Street!

  1. I love Sesame Street! Watching it when my kids were smaller brought back happy memories and I actually remembered some songs. The new characters are great as well as new segments. Alas, Mr. Hooper has passed away but it's great to see old characters who are still there and has grown with the show. Did you know Maria and Luis are now married and still running the Fix-it Shop?
