Jane Austen's Legacy

I must speak to you by such means as are within my reach. You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope. ... I offer myself to you again with a heart even more your own .... Dare not say that man forgets sooner than woman, that his love has an earlier death. I have loved none but you. Unjust I may have been, weak and resentful I have been, but never inconstant. ~~~ Persuasion

I received a birthday gift from a friend all the way from Australia. It's a book entitled "Jane Austen's Guide to Romance: The Regency Rules" by Lauren Henderson. I started and finished reading it this Thanksgiving weekend, in-between family time, meals and TV viewing.

It was a welcome relief after recently reading some dark, mystery suspense books. I thoroughly enjoyed it not only because it was an intriguing book on dating and romance but because of its reference to Jane Austen's characters in her books and the universality of their manifestations and experiences in the modern world.

The book was an entertaining read and a sensible reminder, despite our foibles, of what it is to be a decent and self-respecting human being in the search for love and happiness. It also made me keen to read Austen's other novels. I have only read "Pride and Prejudice" and "Persuasion" so far, which, in my opinion, are a contrast in tone and mood. Currently, I am intrigued by "Northanger Abbey" and looking forward to another amusing revelation of the human emotional and behavioral landscape.
